Daniel was sitting in the sheriff’s office talking with Cory when the thundering of hooves filled the room. Sheriff Rutherford jumped up from his desk. Daniel peered through the window and spotted Callum Muldoon and several other ranchers. Something must have gone wrong. Worry nudged him into action, and he ran out to meet them right behind the sheriff.

Dust flew as the horses pulled to a stop. Callum called out, “We’ve had rustlers out at the ranches. They cut the new fences, and we lost about fifty or so head each. Got my boys doing a search now. I picked up a trail, but decided you needed to be with us, Sheriff.”

Cory grabbed his gun belt as well as Sheriff Rutherford’s and brought them outside. He handed the lawman his guns, and both strapped them on. Sheriff Rutherford went back in and grabbed several badges. When he returned, he handed one to each man. “I’m deputizin’ you into a posse to bring those rustlers in.” He turned to Daniel. “You’re the only other man of law around here, so I’m deputizin’ you to take care of the town until the marshal returns tomorrow.”

Daniel gulped as the sheriff pinned the badge to Daniel’s coat. “Yes, sir, but what if something happens, and—”

“Don’t worry about that. This town is usually as quiet as they come.” The sheriff and Cory both swung up into their saddles, and moments later the entire group had disappeared around the corner.

Daniel glanced down at the badge pinned to his coat and sighed. Nothing to do now but to sit in the sheriff’s office and wait for their return. First he needed a few papers from his own office. He could work on them down here as well as he could up there. He headed down the boardwalk to the building housing his firm. Soon he’d have to think about getting someone to sit in the front office and handle his mail and appointments. Besides a few wills and the timber rights contract, he’d managed to rouse up a few more clients who would keep him busy and help him pay the rent.

At ten in the morning, Porterfield was a sleepy small town like hundreds of others to be seen along Texas trails. The people were friendly, the food and accommodations at Aunt Mae’s more than satisfactory, and business was picking up. All in all, a satisfying move. He did miss his sister and parents, but many others here were becoming like family.

He reached the stairs to his office but stopped when Kate Muldoon pulled up on Red Dawn. “What was my pa doing in town? He sure left in a hurry.”

Wonders never ceased. Kate Muldoon was talking to him. “Your pa and some of the other ranchers had some cattle stolen. Cory and the sheriff took a posse out to track them down.”

“Cattle rustlers? I heard they were having problems south of here, but I didn’t expect them to come up this way.” Her forehead wrinkled in a frown, and she bit her lip.
